The murders of Jews in Virbalis

Here the blood of Jewish children, women, men, and prisoners of war of Lithuanian and other nationalities was shed. They were brutally killed by Nazi executioners and their local collaborators in July-August 1941.
At the beginning of the Nazi occupation, arrested Jewish men and Soviet activists were imprisoned on the territory of the former Raudondvaris estate (about 300 Jewish men and about 20 Lithuanians). In mid-July (around July 10) 1941, a detachment of German officers and soldiers arrived in Virbalis from Kibartai by truck. They organized and carried out a mass killing of the people held in Raudondvaris. The execution site was located about 400 meters from the estate in a meadow where an anti-tank ditch had been dug before the war. The Germans drove the condemned into the ditch in two groups.
A couple of weeks later (around July 29), a second mass shooting was carried out in Virbalis. Again, the victims were Jewish men and Lithuanian Soviet activists. This campaign was also organized by the Germans; about five Germans came to Virbalis. The commander of the local auxiliary police platoon, Krivinskas, was instructed by them and appointed as the executor of the operation; he mobilized all his subordinates. People were again gathered in the Raudondvaris estate building, from where they were taken to the trench. The Germans said that this time the Lithuanian policemen would have to do the shooting because the German soldiers would not participate. Near the ditch, people were stripped, then driven into the ditch in groups and shot from above. In total, about 100 people were killed. They were killed by approximately 15 auxiliary police officers.
After the shooting of the Jewish men, the Jewish women of Virbalis were driven into a ghetto. The women of Kibartai were held in a temporary ghetto until they were transferred to the Raudondvaris estate in the fall of 1941. In total, about 250 women and children were brought to Kibartai. Fighters from the self-defense units of Virbalis and Vilkaviškis arrived at the execution site; the shooting took place in the same ditch. The execution followed the same scenario: the women were stripped and driven into the ditch.
