In 2003, on Milwaukee's Eastside, Gail Simpson's creation - the Compass - found a permanent slot. Commissioned by Eastside Business Improvement District #20, it's a beacon for wanderers on foot and behind the wheel, guiding the way into the North Avenue retail district. Towering at 21 feet, it's built from aluminum, painted and an old stainless steel lamp post. Part art, part signpost, this spiraling mess of abstract symbols reflects the neighborhood's history and personality. As per Whitney Gould, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's architecture critic, it's 'a tango between sculpture and mapping.' The Compass sculpture lives in the North Avenue Bridge's traffic median, right on the Eastside.
