Forte Poggio Croce

Discovered on a path between Sandrà and Bussolengo in the north-east of Verona, Forte Poggio Croce stands 256 meters above the Adige. This fort - initially named Werk Erzherzog Leopold - was built in 1859 by Austria during the Risorgimento.

Forte Poggio Croce, initially named Werk Erzherzog Leopold (Forte Arciduca Leopoldo), was built in 1859 by Austria. Situated on Monte Poggio Croce at 256 meters of elevation, the fort was designed to host the local command and could fire widely, including areas like Sandrà and Bussolengo. After being dismantled, the fort now remains in good condition of conservation and preserves some original shutters. Its plan is polygonal, different from nearby fortifications. The artillery positions, similar to those of other fortifications in the area, could host up to 15 pieces of artillery, as stated earlier, but in 1866, it actually had 14 pieces of cannon-armed artillery.
