Fort Santa Engracia

Built in a day to defend a strategic passage, Fort Santa Engracia changed hands three times. It was destroyed in 1823 to prevent liberal forces from using it.

Fortaleza de Santa Engracia was built for the defense of Pancorbo pass in 1794. Construction was ordered by Don Bernardo de Tortosa, and the fortress was completed in 1797. It could accommodate 3,575 people. In 1808, it was taken by Mariscal French Moncey, but prior to its capture by General Enrique José O'Donnell in 1813, it changed hands multiple times, with its post-Vitoria status being complex and not clear from the given facts. The fortress was taken in 1813 as part of the Sitio de Pancorbo, but it was destroyed in 1823 to prevent liberal troops from acamping (acquiring shelters) in it.
