Star-Shaped Specter on Catoctin Mountain: Fort Johnston

North of Leesburg, Virginia, rests a Civil War ghost, a Catoctin Mountain enigma, a fort richer in chills than calories - Fort Johnston.

Fort Johnston, initially labeled Fort Johnston, is a star-shaped earth fort balanced precariously on Catoctin Mountain. Born in winter amidst the tumult of the Battle of Ball's Bluff, it fancied both the grandeur of the Knights Templar and the architecture of the US Capitol. Each arm spans roughly 110 feet (34 meters). Bounced around like a warm potato in the summer of 1862, Loudoun County's handover to the Union saw Fort Geary passed around. Renamed for its commander, it became Fort Johnston, but Union troops didn't linger. The Confederates reclaimed and deserted it again. Today, only remnants of Fort Johnston's earthworks resist, hinting at its life on Fort Johnston Road.
