Fans of twisted plots and immersive atmospheres are welcomed by the hospitable Hawaii. The luxurious Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea served as the filming location for the first season of HBO’s series "The White Lotus." According to the script, wealthy tourists spend a week at an elite spa hotel, which ends in tragedy. The vivid visuals, a blend of contemporary themes and satire on them, surprisingly fresh yet clichéd character types and storylines — all of this made the series one of the channel’s and streaming services’ main premieres in 2021.
The six-episode series (which was renewed for a second season) was entirely shot on location at the Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea during the pandemic, with the cast and crew mostly confined to the 15-acre property. Rumor has it that when the hotel management received the offer from HBO, they said "yes" without reading a single script. At that time, the resort had been boarded up for about seven months, and "The White Lotus" was a chance to bring back some of the long-laid-off staff. Besides, it was HBO! What could possibly go wrong?
The hotel complex is located on the sunny side of Maui — one of the most picturesque islands of the archipelago. For guests, there are three saltwater pools, including an infinity pool with panoramic views of Lanai and the West Maui mountains.
