Governor Arnall: A Progressive Icon, Still Echoing in the Georgia State Capitol

Visit the Georgia State Capitol and you'll find a statue of Ellis Arnall, a visionary governor. For the full story, stroll a couple of blocks towards the Capitol Annex.

In 2012, the Ellis Arnall statue, donated by the Central Presbyterian Church, was shifted to the memorial stretch of the Capitol grounds. Sculpted by Zenos Frudakis, it faces the church and joins other tributes to Georgian leaders. As governor from 1943 to 1947, Arnall grappled with progressive concerns like abolishing the poll tax and setting the voting age at 18. Companion statues there include the Capitol's inaugural governor, James Jackson, and the fourth governor, Wilson Lumpkin. Though incomplete, a journey to the Capitol memorial section offers a more balanced account.
