Meet Echo Gate: Portland's Quirky Steampunk Attraction on the Eastbank Esplanade

Heading to Portland? Don't miss out on Echo Gate, a captivating art installation tucked away along the Eastbank Esplanade. Take a gander at this 2001 marvel, masked as an aged pier, Shanghai tunnels, and rusty ships, blending seamlessly with the waterfront.

Echo Gate, a 2001 artwork masterpiece, dons the guise of conventional pier structures, Shanghai tunnels, and maritime relics. Created by the genius duo Ean Eldred and Rigga, this treat can be found nestled on the Eastbank Esplanade in Portland, Oregon. This masterpiece was born from the Portland Development Commission's Percent for Art program, spanning 13 feet (4.0 m) x 9 feet (2.7 m) x 7 feet (2.1 m). Echo Gate's unique, round entrance adorns a foldable rectangle, making it a charming addition to Portland's City and Multnomah County Public Art Collection.

This fellow provides a comforting human touch to the sprawling site, chatting softly to the river in its own way, amidst the cacophony of the freeway. Echo Gate can be found accompanying four Rigga sculptures scattered along the esplanade, consisting of Alluvial Wall by Peter Nylen, Ghost Ship by James Harrison, and Stack Stalk by Ean Eldred.
