Shamil's Gazebo or Baryatinsky's Rotunda is a monument to the people's feat in the Caucasian War, the place where the Caucasian War was concluded in 1859. Negotiations took place here between Imam Shamil and Prince Baryatinsky.
In the center of the rotunda is a gray boulder—the very one on which Prince Baryatinsky sat during the negotiations with Shamil. This scene has been captured in many paintings. The stone is historically authentic, but the gazebo was less fortunate. The rotunda, built in 1893, was decorated with a double-headed eagle and a cast-iron plaque inscribed: "On this stone sat General Field Marshal Prince Baryatinsky, receiving the captured Shamil on August 25, 1859."
There are several versions of how this happened. The classic version is that after the fortress was surrounded by the tsarist troops and its defenders had no chance to avoid death, Shamil, along with the remaining warriors, rode out beyond its walls to meet the commander of the Russian troops, General Alexander Baryatinsky. The meeting took place a couple of kilometers from the gates of Gunib. The general was waiting for Shamil right on this stone, on which Shamil's gazebo later appeared.
The gazebo has survived more than one "attack." The first time it was destroyed during one of the mountain uprisings; in the 1920s, local Komsomol members tore down the double-headed eagle from the restored gazebo; and in the late 1990s, it was blown up by Wahhabis. The local residents restored it on their own, as there was no money to hire restorers from the Center. However, they tried to preserve the architectural design of the structure. The gazebo lost its commemorative cast-iron plaque, but the stone endured…
It is clear that this place is popular with the locals. The tree next to the gazebo is wrapped from root to the last branch with colorful ribbons and scarves—for good luck. And the rotunda itself is periodically decorated by schoolchildren with marker inscriptions saying "Shamil was here." The gazebo is washed and painted, but the "artwork" reappears again…
One of the main events of the Caucasian War was the capture of the resistance leader Imam Shamil, which took place in the fortress of the village of Gunib. There are quite a few reminders of these events in the highland village of Dagestan, one of which is the gazebo where the last mountaineers accepted the terms of surrender.
