The heavily eroded Čiulėnų (Juodasis Kalnas) hillfort, in Molėtų municipality's territory north of Čiulěnai village, intrigues researchers and visitors alike. Excavated in 1970 by the Institute of History and re-examined by the Scientific Board in 1978, this ancient monument from the Iron Age remains a puzzling enigma, as its dating to the 1st millennium BC is still not precise. Protected by the Lithuanian government since 1998, it is now under the care of the National Museum of Lithuania. Despite the unclear trail making it accessible to the public, the hillfort's enigmatic charm remains intact.
