Y'all Meet the Old-Timer Fire Towers of New Mexico's Gila Forest

Ghost stories (not so much, though) and off-the-beaten-path adventures through a charred swath of forest fire station stationed in Gila National Forest

Way back in 1934, the El Caso Lookout Complex got itself invited to New Mexico’s Gila National Forest, thanks to the Works Progress Administration. These rustic outlaws fit right in, setting up shop on a ridge - relics of the New Deal's desperate attempts to bolt the reins on the country’s rugged landscapes. The El Caso trio of misfits played house among the trees -- a blast from the past, if you will. Tied to the Mangas Mountain and Bearwallow Mountain Lookout Complexes, they formed quite the (not-too-scary) posse in Catron County, New Mexico. Intriguingly enough, no myth nor mayhem swirls around these fire-fighting legends.
