12th-century Lookout Castle in La Mota Valley, Spain

The Castillo de las Paleras, known as La Mota Castle, is a historical site situated on a small hill on the right bank of the Barranco de La Mota. Originating from the defense of an Islamic settlement, likely dating back to the 12th century, this site was the first notable medieval Islamic settlement in the Pliego town, Spain. Declared a cultural heritage site in 1985, the settlement of La Mota grew in size and defensive characteristics during the second half of the 12th century, retaining these qualities even in its current, ruined state.
