Castell de Toses: The Lasting Legacy of a Millennial Stronghold

Castell de Toses, situated in Toses, Catalonia, Spain, is a cultural landmark of national importance. The possible remains of the Castell de Toses can be found on a hill, known as Castellassos, over the urban area of Toses. A small, exact 8x20-meter elliptical mound of land, surrounded by a ditch, is believed to have been the castle's foundation.

First mentioned in 1284, when King Jaume II of Mallorca granted it to Blanca d'Urtx and her son, Ramon d'Urtx, the Castell de Toses was initially a part of the Mataplana family's inheritance. Over subsequent centuries, the castell changed hands, including the Pinós family in the 14th century and eventually the dukes of Alba, who held control over the castell and the valley of Toses until the end of the jurisdictional lordships.
