Bridge Destroyed by War and Floodwaters: Ponte de Salcedo

Ponte de Salcedo was a bridge over the Rio Navia, situated in Salcedo, Grandas de Salime. It formed a part of a road project that descended continuously from Grandas towards the south, upstream of the Navia, to reach the level of the river in Salcedo, two kilometers upstream of Salime. The bridge consisted of two metal arches and a 36-meter-long track. In 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, Republican forces destroyed the bridge by blowing it up as they retreated towards Asturias. A temporary passageway was built, but a new permanent bridge was constructed in 1940, boasting a bi-articulated arch of 34 meters in width and a 4-meter-high deck. Each of the two semi-arches consisted of a lattice of nailed boards. Similar to its counterpart, Ponte de Salime, Ponte de Salcedo vanished in 1953 due to flooding from the Salime dam.
