Pioneering 19th-Century Sugar Mill of Farthest Southern Spain - Azucarera

The Azucarera Nuestra Señora del Rosario, situated in Salobreña, isn't just the oldest sugar factory in Granada or southern Spain; it was the largest 19th-century producer of sugar in its region. A notable transformation in 1928 saw key changes to its moltoración nave.

Having been established by Joaquín Agrela Moreno between 1861 and 1861, the Azucarera Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Salobreña remained operational until 2006. Notably, the training of factory workers ceased in 1974, yet the moltoración nave, housing the most significant machinery, retains the train of mills, powered by the last operational steam engine found in any European sugar mill. The metamorphosis occurred in 1928, when fresh machinery was installed within the molinos, evaporación y tachas sections.
