Altruistic prisoner of Ardeatine Cave

Why a Catholic priest in Rome was arrested and murdered by the Nazis during the World War II

Don Pietro Pappagallo (1888-1944) was a Roman Catholic priest who provided aid to soldiers, partisans, allies, Jews, and others wanted by the regime during the German occupation of Rome. His altruistic actions caught the attention of the Nazis and he was arrested on January 29, 1944. Pappagallo was executed on March 24, 1944 at the Ardeatine Caves in Rome. His story is immortalized in movies and books, and he is recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
