The Beginning of Creativity and First Poet Friends

Fontanka River Embankment, 50, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 191002

A report on samples of abstract poetic zaum, which distorts and transforms the world from a 360-degree perspective.

The young Kharms could be found together with his like-minded friends Alexander Tufanov and Alexander Vvedensky at the Union of Poets branch in the house at the corner of Grafsky Lane and the Fontanka River. In the 1920s, the All-Russian Union of Writers was located here in a small apartment. F. K. Sologub, N. Braun, M. Kozakov, B. Lavrenyov, V. Shishkov, A. Chapygin, A. S. Grin, G. Frish, and L. I. Borisov used to visit here. On December 29, 1925, a civil memorial service for S. Yesenin was held here.

In this building, the twenty-year-old Kharms gave a report on examples of abstract poetic zaum, which distorts and transforms the world from a 360-degree angle.

Zaum or zaumny language is a literary device that consists of a complete or partial rejection of all or some elements of the natural language and their replacement with other elements or constructions, analogously understood as linguistic. It is incorrect to understand zaum as a rejection of meaning altogether or as an imitation of certain speech disorders such as schizophasia.
Here, in 1925, Kharms met members of the poetic-philosophical circle "Chinars," which included Alexander Vvedensky, Leonid Lipavsky, Yakov Druskin, and others. In 1926–1927, Daniil organized groups such as "Left Flank" and the "Academy of Left Classics" in an attempt to unite the "left" writers and artists of Leningrad.
