The Mangal Mahadev sculpture

The Mangal Mahadev sculpture

The tallest statue in Mauritius, a replica of a statue in India, is a sacred place for pilgrims during Shivaratri.

At the entrance of Ganga Talao, a crater lake in the Savanne district of Mauritius, stands the Mangal Mahadev monument. This sculpture of the Hindu god Shiva reaches a height of 33 meters, making it the tallest statue in the country. It is a replica of the Shiva statue located in Sursagar lake in Vadodara, Gujarat, India.

The Mangal Mahadev Monument was inaugurated in 2007, with the "Sthapan" performed during the Maha Shivratri period of 2008. It is considered the most sacred Hindu place in Mauritius. On the banks of the Grand Bassin, the Shiva Temple and the Mangal Mahadev statue are surrounded by temples dedicated to other deities, including Durga, Hanuman, Lakshmi and Ganesh.

During the festival of Shivaratri, the site becomes a major destination for worship. Many pilgrims in Mauritius walk barefoot from their homes to the lake to pray at the feet of the sculpture.
