In a quiet corner of Petersburg stands a monument to the lost book. This unusual monument is located at 55 Liteyny Prospect, on a bench in the courtyard of Printing House No. 3.
This monument has a double meaning. In 1863, near this place, the poet and publisher Nikolay Nekrasov lost the manuscript of Nikolay Chernyshevsky's novel "What Is to Be Done?" Fortunately, it was found, but otherwise Russian literature could have lost one of the significant works important for the country's development. Secondly, as sad as it is, the paper book is disappearing from our lives, being replaced by various electronic devices. What created modern civilization is leaving our lives.
The creator of the "Lost Book" was Veronika Bernard, a graduate of the Repin Academy of Arts. The sculptor expressed hope that the citizens would not remain indifferent to the new sculpture. While working on the monument, Bernard deliberately made the book resemble characters from cartoons, wishing to make it an interesting object for guests and residents of Petersburg.
