Entangled: The abstract steel sculpture of Brose Partington

In 2004, an abstract sculpture was created in Indianapolis by Brose Partington. The piece, titled Entangled, measures 108 inches by 88 inches by 98 inches and is constructed from powder coated steel, including rolled steel tubes and fabricated steel circles. It is located on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) campus at the Herron School of Art and Design on 735 W. New York Street. The sculpture was given to Herron by Ezra Freidlander and Linda H. Freidlander in 2005.

Initially, the sculpture was located on the Freidlanders' private property from 2004 to 2008 before being moved to its current location on the IUPUI campus. The sculpture consists of eight unique elements bolted together to create an enclosed form and is mounted on a 16-foot diameter concrete pad in the Herron Sculpture Garden. The curved support structure at the base of the sculpture references the shape of a bird's nest as it encloses and supports the sculptural elements.

Partington's maquette of Entangled won a sculpture competition for which the Freidlanders contributed to the funding. The artist's work examines the subtle movements around us and the patterns those movements create, comparing cyclical patterns in nature with manufactured objects and modes of transportation. Partington's father owned a clock repair shop in Indianapolis during his childhood, and the clocks, gears, and mechanisms of that shop influence his sculptures today.
