The Quaint Confederate Memorial Gates of Mayfield, KY: A Yarn from the Past

Brush aside the usual for a charming diversion - wandering through the mystique of Mayfield Cemetery in Kentucky, you'll find these unique, history-imbued Confederate Memorial Gates.

Deep within Mayfield Cemetery, surrounded by evergreens, you'll stumble upon the Confederate Memorial Gates - not your typical gate posts, but a time-traveling pathway to reminisce, a tribute to the thrilling history of this little Kentucky town. Erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, these gates were the second monument raised, quickly following the Confederate Memorial downtown Mayfield. The UDC constructed these gates as a nod to the citizens of Graves County who fought for the Confederate States of America, and as a way to spruce up the place.

Standing proud, each post spans two feet at their base and towers ten feet tall. There's an impressive 27 feet between the posts when they're shut. The center post, three feet wide and a staggering 285 feet from the main gates, is a sight to behold in itself. A third post, again three feet wide, 330 feet from the center gates, adds to the air of mystery surrounding these historic structures. Each post bears a bronze plaque - on the left, it reads 'WORLD WAR / VETERANS / 1914 1918', and on the right, 'CONFEDERATE / VETERANS / 1861 1865'.
