Giant Ditches Surrounding a Hillfort Discovered in Šiauleliai, Lithuania

Uncovered in the territory of Raseinių rajono savivaldybė, Šiaulelių piliakalnis, also known as Pilalė, is a hillfort in Lithuania. Reachable via the road from Šiluva to Kaulakiai, it is part of Tytuvėnų regional park. The fort stands on a separate hill and follows a quadrilateral shape, enclosed by a ditch 17 meters wide. The height of the fort varies, ranging from the bottom of the ditch (0 meters above the surrounding landscape) to the highest point (10 meters above the surrounding landscape). Although some parts of the defenses have declined, traces are still evident, physically hindering an attack. The Institute of History excavated the site in 1967, determining it to have origins in the early 1st millennium AD.
