A Frightful December Night in Buffalo, NY - 1983

Five firefighters and two civilians met their bitter end in a propane blast in Buffalo, NY, on a frigid December 27, 1983. Today, a memorial stands at the site of this dismal episode.

On a chilly December 27th in 1983, Buffalo's firefighters were summoned to a four-story radiator warehouse in New York. Inside, a clandestinely hoarded 500-gallon propane tank was leaking gas. When the explosion struck, it took the lives of firefighters Mike Austin, Mickey Catanzaro, Red Lickfeld, Tony Waszkielewicz, and Matty Colpoys, as well as Alfred and Jessie Arnold, two civilians. The blast's force reduced the warehouse to ruins, causing nearby buildings within a four-block radius to collapse. A memorial now Commemorates the tragedy's site, and the fire department annually echoes '1-9-1' on this date, a solemn nod to the lives that perished.
