Nestled within the heart of Forest Park, St. Louis, lies a radiant gem known as the Floral Conservatory, or the enchanting Jewel Box. Built by the city engineer William C. E. Becker and unveiled in the sparkling year of 1936, the Jewel Box replaced simpler displays to become a permanent home for plants, offering weary travelers a tender embrace of greenery amidst their park explorations.
Graced with the support of the Public Works Administration, this 16,000 square foot greenhouse beams with gleaming plate glass set within intricate wood and iron framing. Its resilient glass structure, designed to capture winter sunlight, stands strong even against hail damage. Through the years, the Jewel Box has graced Forest Park with its radiant presence since 1926.
In the year 2000, the Jewel Box earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places. Undergoing a breathtaking restoration in the year 2002, the Jewel Box continues to shine as a radiant floral conservatory and event space, inviting each and every visitor on a wondrous journey filled with enchantment!
