Led Zeppelin and the flying TVs

The Edgewater Hotel used to be very popular among touring music bands back in the 60s and 70s. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Kurt Cobain, and Black Sabbath stayed there, among others. The hotel also had a reputation for rock ‘n’ roll debauchery. And Led Zeppelin definitely had a hand in this.

Throwing a TV out of a hotel window is an old rock ‘n’ roll tradition. But few people have been as keen on following this tradition as Led Zeppelin. One night in 1977 Robert Plant and Jimmy Page set a record: five TVs went out of the window of The Edgewater Hotel. The next morning, Led Zeppelin’s tour manager Richard Cole, still unaware of what had happened, came to pay the bill for their accommodation. James Bloom, the hotel manager, swallowed nervously and informed him that he had to charge an additional two and a half thousand dollars - five hundred for each TV. Cole did not even look surprised, he simply paid and got ready to leave. Bloom, who was a fan of the band and fascinated by the rebellious rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, could not help asking him: “Forgive me, Mr. Cole. I heard about such things, but I always thought it was all nonsense. Can you tell me what it feels like to throw a TV out the window?” Cole turned around and said, "Man, there are things in life that you have to experience for yourself." He took out five hundred-dollar bills and handed them to Bloom: “Here, buddy. Do it at Led Zeppelin's expense."

Bonus fact: the hotel is also famous for hosting The Beatles when they visited Seattle in 1964 at the height of Beatlemania. Because of the Beatles' connection to the hotel, there is a Beatles-themed suite and the hotel has hosted several Beatles-related events and tributes.
