On the southern side of the platform is the Original Temple, a modest one-story building consisting of two halls with a small altar on which a stele is placed. The stele is engraved with the date—564 AD. The temple was named so because the date on the stele dates back to the time when Tulum was just a small town. Since most of Tulum's buildings date to the year 900, it is assumed that the stele was brought from a neighboring Maya city, probably from Coba. The stele, 1.8 meters tall, is made in the form of a bas-relief with a long inscription framing the image; its base was damaged by water erosion and other factors, contributing to the lack of details along the edges and its base. Currently, one can see molded figurines that once decorated the facade.
