The Last Shelter of Tsoi

Viktor Tsoi was a native of Saint Petersburg, and it was decided to bury him in his hometown as well — in Saint Petersburg. On August 19, 1990, he was buried at the Bogoslovskoe Cemetery. Finding his grave is not difficult; hundreds of fans of the legendary lead singer of the immortal band "KINO" make pilgrimages there daily.

Viktor Tsoi was a native of Saint Petersburg, and it was decided to bury him in his hometown – in Saint Petersburg. On August 19, 1990, he was buried at the Bogoslovskoe Cemetery. Finding the burial site is not difficult, as hundreds of fans of the legendary lead singer of the immortal band "KINO" make pilgrimages there daily.

He passed away too suddenly, too early. On August 15, a tragic car accident, the causes of which remain unknown to this day, took the life of a talented person who had not yet fully revealed his potential, but at the same time had achieved so much. The flow of people wishing to visit the singer’s final resting place never ceases. Flowers, candles, and portraits continue to be brought to the memorial monument. Fans still gather there for quiet conversations or to sing songs softly together. The singer’s father, Robert Maksimovich, also comes here. The grave of the prematurely departed rock musician does not resemble an ordinary resting place. It is a true monument to immortal creativity, an extraordinary personality who managed to leave such a strong and indelible mark in such a short life. The monument is a wide granite column. Its top is crowned with a semicircle of a solar disk with radiating rays, on which the proud profile of the singer stands out. Viktor Tsoi’s portrait for this monument was painted by his wife, Maryana Tsoi. Maryana Tsoi herself outlived the famous husband by 15 years and is buried here as well, opposite her husband’s grave. She passed away after a long but, unfortunately, unsuccessful battle with cancer. The singer’s mother, Valentina Vasilievna, is also buried near the round grave of her famous son, surrounded by a neat fence. Valentina Vasilievna died of heart disease at the age of 72. The Bogoslovskoe Cemetery in Saint Petersburg is also known for being the burial place of another, more modern rock idol. This refers to Mikhail Gorshenev, the lead singer of the popular horror-punk band "Korol i Shut." He was laid to rest here in 2013 after his sudden death from a heart attack. Incidentally, the musician also died young – at the age of 39, but for completely different reasons.

Tsoi's Childhood – The House with a Spire

41 Basseynaya St., Saint Petersburg, Russia, 196070

Tsoi's childhood and youth were spent in the house with a spire — at the corner of Moskovsky Prospekt and Basseynaya Street. The "General's House" near the Park Pobedy metro station is visible from any point on the government route thanks to its 76-meter spire topped with a wreath and a star.

Youth, the first bands of Tsoi

30 Stoykosti St., Building 2, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 198261

Having finished eight grades, and since Viktor was good at drawing and had a talent for other arts, he enrolled in the "Serov School." At the school, he discovered his talent as a musician and became a member of the band "Ward No. 6." Tsoi never graduated from the school — he was expelled in his second year for poor academic performance. Witnesses claim that his passion for music was partly to blame. Later, at his parents' insistence, Viktor enrolled in SGPTU-61, specializing in "Wood Carving." Viktor Tsoi's diploma work at SGPTU Photo source: Alexander Verestov/vk.com/club118447123

Elven Garden

Dmitrovsky Square, Stremyannaya St., Saint Petersburg, Russia, 191025

The "Elvish" or "Elf" garden got its name from the nearby café "Elf." In the 1980s, the café and the square were meeting places for creative people — representatives of the Leningrad underground. Artists, poets, rock musicians, philosophers, and simply hippies gathered in the square. Among them were Viktor Tsoi, Boris Grebenshchikov, and Alexander Bashlachev.

Moika River Embankment, 211, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 190121

Like some "especially advanced" young men from the 80s, Viktor Tsoi decided to "dodge" the army. In 1983, he was admitted to this well-known city clinic for a month and a half. The doctors treated the young man without proper respect. The musician had to experience firsthand all the joys of Soviet psychiatric medicine.

Now, a club-museum dedicated to Viktor Tsoi operates here.

The Death of Tsoi – "KINO" is Over

P128, Sēmes Parish, LV-3110, Latvia

A collision between a dark blue “Moskvich-2141” car and a white “Ikarus-250” bus occurred at 11:28 AM on August 15, 1990, at the 35th kilometer of the Sloka — Taley highway. Next to the car, a young dark-haired man lay, barely extracted from the cabin by the doctors of the ambulance that had arrived a little earlier. Without a doubt, he died instantly.
