The last home of René Decartes

Kornhamnstorg 51, 111 27 Stockholm, Sweden

French philosopher dies in the Swedish cold

In 1649 Queen Christina invited René Descartes (“I think, therefore I am”) to Sweden to become her tutor and advisor. The famous French philosopher, mathematician and scientist accepted her invitation and moved to Stockholm in the middle of winter. He stayed in the house in the corner of Kornhamnstorg 51 and Västerlånggatan 68, a few hundred meters from the Royal Palace. He started giving lessons to the Queen, however within a couple of months in the harsh climate he contracted pneumonia and died.
