Jauniela 24, Central District, Riga, LV-1050, Latvia
In this house on “Flower Street,” Professor Pleischner admired birds after his first visit to the safe apartment. Currently, the building houses the Justus Hotel, whose name amusingly echoes Stierlitz’s operational pseudonym. Remember Stierlitz’s ciphers to Moscow “Justas - Alex”? It’s hardly a coincidence that the restaurant at the hotel is called "Alex." In the hotel lobby hangs a portrait of Professor Pleischner, and the breakfast room is adorned with portraits of Stierlitz.
The history of this house, of course, began long before the filming of the movie. In the depths of the centuries, this very place was chosen by Bishop Albert to build his Baltic residence on the right bank of the Daugava River on the site of a fishing village. Unfortunately, a fire in the 17th century destroyed the ancient wooden buildings. The architectural facade of the hotel has been preserved since the last major reconstruction in 1874. The building remembers the times when in the 19th century it first housed a tavern with billiards, then a printing and lithography shop, in the 20th century – artisan workshops, a pharmaceutical laboratory, and later – a cinema gallery.
