Waisenstraße 14-16, 10179 Berlin, Germany
The restaurant Zur letzten Instanz ("At the Last Instance") is one of the oldest in Berlin, operating since 1621. The restaurant has changed its name many times, acquiring its current name only in 1924. According to one version, the name is connected to a long legal dispute between two farmers in a nearby court, which ended with the signing of a settlement agreement precisely in this tavern, which thus became the last instance. According to another (less cheerful) version, the name is related to an old cemetery located nearby, that is, the last instance on the path of life. But to the Russian audience, this restaurant is known as "At Rough Gottlieb's" (Zum Grobben Gottlieb). It was here that SS Standartenführer and Soviet intelligence colonel Stirlitz dined with Pastor Schlag, and also relaxed with a mug of beer after shaking off the "tail" of Mueller's agents, in the film "Seventeen Moments of Spring."
