Somewhere at Chateau Marmont

8221 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046, USA

Although the title of Sofia Coppola’s "Somewhere" (2010) suggests a certain spatial ambiguity, the action of the film takes place in two very specific locations: the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles and the Principe di Savoia hotel in Milan (see https://reveal.world/story/somewhere-in-milan) . The first is a well-known gathering place for leading Hollywood newsmakers, and the main character, popular and successful actor Johnny Marco played by Stephen Dorff, rents an apartment there.

This hotel also appears in the Academy Award-winning films “La La Land” (2016) and “A Star Is Born” (2018), as well as “The Strip” (1951),  “The Night Walker” (1964), “The Doors” (1991), “Dangerous Game” (1993), “Laurel Canyon” (2003), and “Maps to the Stars” (2014).

Chateau Marmont is also known as both a long- and short-term residence for celebrities and a home for New Yorkers in Hollywood. Its guests list include Keanu Reeves who stayed here for extended periods, Hunter S. Thompson, Annie Leibovitz, Dorothy Parker, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Tim Burton.

Chateau Marmont witnessed a few truly historic moments, and some tragic ones too. It was here that comedian John Belushi died from an overdose in one of the rooms on March 5, 1982. Photographer Helmut Newton also passed away at the hotel when, on January 23, 2004, he crashed his car into a wall along the driveway from Sunset Boulevard. On a more positive  note - Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor married the band's hairdresser Tracey Wilson at the hotel in 1982.
