The building of the Patriotic Institute has maintained its primary purpose for over 200 years — to be an educational institution. Since its founding, the daughters of heroes of the Patriotic War of 1812 studied there. In the 1830s, Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol taught history in this building. After the October Revolution, Soviet students mastered the fundamental principles of physics and mechanics here. Initially, it housed the Women's Polytechnic Institute, later the Electrotechnical School was opened, which was transformed into the Energy Technical School, where Daniil enrolled in 1924.
At that time, Kharms became fascinated with art and poetry. Moreover, he immediately came under the influence of avant-garde artists — Velimir Khlebnikov, Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Tufanov (the latter, by the way, created the "Order of Zaumniks DSO"), who experimented in the fields of word creation and painting. It is no surprise that the term "zaum" would forever be associated with Kharms' work. Although what is so "zaum" (transrational) about his school pun "zadam po zadam za dam"? At the technical school, things did not go well for Daniil from the start. By the end of the first academic year, in June 1925, the following entry appeared in his notebook:
Several accusations have been made against me, for which I must leave the technical school. As far as I know, these accusations are of the following nature:
Poor attendance.
Lack of activity in public work.
I am not physiologically suited to the class.
In response to these accusations, I can say the following. The technical school must train electrical engineers. This seems clear. For this, there must be listener-people — good workers, so as not to clog the path for others.
The workability of people is judged either directly from their work or through psychological analysis. I will hint at the second. I doubt it.
This entry is cut off, many phrases are crossed out. Clearly, Daniil was preparing for a defense at some meeting. On July 9, there is another entry, in German: Yuvachev-Kharms prays to God to help him "stay in the Technical School." At that moment, he succeeded, but on February 13, 1926, he was finally expelled.
What could it mean: "I am not physiologically suited to the class"? However, there is something symbolic in this strange formulation. Kharms was indeed, apparently, "physiologically" alien to the spirit of the era, not fitting into its stylistics.
This technical school was the last educational institution where Kharms studied.
