What good is a palace without a secret escape route? Of course, there is one leading out of Stockholm Royal Palace.
The passage starts at the King’s premises, goes through the cellar and out to the waters of Stockholm’s Stream. From Strömparterren one can see a small wooden door under the Norrbro bridge – this is where the tunnel opens. At the times when the tunnel was built Norrbro bridge did not exist. There used to be a wooden bridge instead leading to another tunnel that in its turn ended up at Royal Stables. It is said that King Karl XI used this route not only to get to his horses unseen, but also to get out and travel around his country in disguise.
