Kirov Square, Building 11, Sortavala, Republic of Karelia, Russia, 186790

The Siitonen Merchants' House was built in 1907 according to the design of architect Paavo Uotila (1881-1964). This was one of the young architect’s first works, and he received an award for this project. It is one of his earliest buildings. For it, Paavo was awarded a prize. The building is constructed in the style of Northern Modernism of the 20th century. The first floor housed rental spaces for shops. The second and third floors contained residential apartments. The building was considered an income house and was distinguished by wide windows that offered a magnificent view of the city. The house was owned by merchants Nikola and Konstantin Siitonen. The Siitonen family traces its origins back to the 14th century. The surname has Russian roots – as early as the 16th century, Vasily Sidorov built fortifications against the Russians near the city of Helsinki (in the Sakkola area). Later, he became a merchant, trading in furs, pelts, and grain. Subsequently, his descendants, including Nikola and Konstantin, managed to increase the family fortune. An interesting note: today, about 5,000 people with this surname live in Finland. Currently, the former merchants' house houses the administration of the Sortavala municipal district.
