And in the episode "The Bloody Inscription," Hope drives Drebber past the Academy of Arts in a cab.

In ancient times, there were tall sandy dunes at this site, rising above the city ramparts, so for strategic reasons they were removed in the 18th century, and in their place in 1772 the Esplanade was constructed – a free-of-buildings zone around the Riga fortress.

The area was used for troop training. In 1817, the Verman Garden was opened here. The Esplanade lost its significance with the demolition of the ramparts and bastions in 1857. The territory passed into city ownership, streets, boulevards, and parks were created, and partial development of the Esplanade was planned.

Song festivals were held here, open-air theatrical performances and exhibitions were organized. In 1919, a solemn burial of the Communards who fell fighting for Soviet power was held on the Esplanade, and the square was renamed Communards Park, which was its name during the filming of the Holmes movie. In 1950–52, the greenery was altered – paths with concrete pavement were laid, lawns and a rose garden were created, and a children's playground was arranged.
