Hidden from the tourists and even the locals this underground bathhouse (Storkyrkobadet) lies in the basement which dates back to the 18th century. Now housing a school, the building used to be a Dominican convent of the so called Black Brother Monks. At those times this arched basement served as a wine cellar and later a coal storage. It stayed as part of the Dominican order until 1890, when the building was taken over by a school. The children did not need a wine cellar or a coal storage, but they needed to exercise and so the pool was built.
The bathhouse remains old-fashioned with separate opening hours for men and women. Probably, because of this it has become popular in the Stockholm gay community. It is known as the place where the famous journalist Jonas Gardell and his husband Mark Levengood first met.
