Hell’s Alley

Prästgatan 3, Stockholm, Sweden

In the Middle Ages this dark corner of Prästgatan was known as the Hell’s Alley or simply The Hell. At the time, it was quite close to the gallows (which were later moved to Södermalm - https://reveal.world/story/1354 ). Here, in one of the houses the town executioner used to live. Executioners were usually people sentenced to death who were allowed to live if they took this job. The original executioner’s house was demolished along with other small old houses in mid-16th century, but the name stuck.
